Update on Proposed Public Access Kayak Launch Site on Lummi Island
7/10/07
We recently received this update from Tom Barrett one of the people working on the Lummi launch site.
Periodically we email an update on the project to build a kayak launch site adjacent to the ferry landing on Lummi Island. We first want to put this project in perspective: It is moving at the speed of light, considering that it involves a shoreline permit! We spoke with Mike McFarlane, County Parks Director, who relayed that the project is progressing through the permitting process and it appears that there are no insurmountable impediments to project completion. The launch site project will involve removing some rip rap, preparing the slope and building a low impact gravel trail to the beach. That may not sound like a big deal, but, if you have been involved with shoreline projects, everything is a big deal and proceeds slowly through a rigorous regulatory process.
