Proposed Location for Lummi Launch Site is Changed
Planning is steadily progressing on the launch site on Lummi. We recently spoke with Mike McFarlane (County Parks Director) and can report continued strong support by the Parks Department and Ferry Operations (Ken Richardson, Ferry Manager).
After researching property lines for placement of the launch site on the left side of the ferry landing (as you are arriving on Lummi), it was determined that the County did not own sufficient property to place the launch site there. The proposed launch site will be on the right side of the ferry landing (as you are arriving on Lummi). A Parks Department staff person is in the process of applying for a permit to move or modify rip rap for the proposed launch site, so we are moving forward. Shoreline permitting is a lengthy process, and there is work to be done on planning access from the ferry landing dock or from the road (possibly coordinated with the proposed new ferry parking site).
We are fortunate that our County officials (Mike McFarlane, Ken Richardson, Councilwoman Barbara Brenner and others) are so supportive. We'll check back with Mike in three or four months so that we can get back with you and keep the kayaking/canoeing community informed and excited about this wonderful project.
