Reg Lake Pushes Through Chilean Ice

For those of you who don’t know, our own Reg Lake is spending four weeks in an unexplored, ten mile long, iced-in fjord in the Andes Mountains. Together with Outside Magazine Editor, Grayson Schaffer, the two men are attempting to find a water route through the ice. The expedition is sponsored by Outside Magazine and several vendors including Necky, Kokatat, and Werner. Here is part of Reg’s latest email about the trip:

“Getting close to launching date. I just got back into Punta Arenas from Puerto Natales where I have been working out the final trip logistics for the past two weeks. The kayaks arrived here yesterday, Grayson Schaffer arrives tomorrow and Monday we head up the Straits of Magellan on a fishing boat that will drop us off in Seno Peel. We will explore that area for almost four weeks, checking out glaciers in Fiordos Peel, Calvo, Asia, and Amalia. On March 9 we get picked up by a Navimag ferry heading to Puerto Montt."

"Grayson is bringing a sat phone as required by the authorities here. I just found out that he will be calling in field reports to the magazine so something might be showing up at Outside Online http://outside.away.com/index.html.”

If you want to see where the guys are hanging out, visit Google Earth 50 degrees 30 minutes South and move the pointer into the Andes until you reach a ten mile long fiord that is half full of ice.

Reg’s last comment in his email:

“Life is good. Not to taunt, but it is summer here.”

Yeah. Rub it in, Reg.
